On Tuesday, May 19 2020, Johnson & Johnson announced that it was discontinuing all sales of its Talcum baby powder. This announcement includes not only the United States, but Canada as well. This announcement about the talcum powder is a direct effect of the many lawsuits pending against Johnson & Johnson due to cancer.
According to Johnson & Johnson the discontinuing is “due to loss of sales and changes in consumer habits due to misinformation around the product and constant litigation.”
Johnson & Johnson still deny allegations about their talcum powder causing cancer. The company said it “remains steadfastly confident in the safety of talc-based Johnson’s Baby Powder.”
“Decades of scientific studies by medical experts around the world support the safety of our product,” the company said in a statement to CNBC. “We will continue to vigorously defend the product, its safety, and the unfounded allegations against it and the company in the courtroom.”
Talcum baby powder was first released in 1893, where it was advertised “safe enough for babies”. As time moved forward, the powder would be marketed towards women for genital freshness. Decades later the first successful lawsuit would be filed against Johnson & Johnson alleging the talcum powder caused ovarian cancer due to harmful impurities. This case opened up the door for many more lawsuits against the company.
To date, Johnson & Johnson has lost billions in damages due to being found responsible for women developing ovarian cancer by using their product. They have also been found responsible for consumers developing mesothelioma cancer due to asbestos exposure.
In 2019, over thirty thousand bottles was recalled by Johnson & Johnson after the FDA found asbestos in samples of the baby powder.
