Like the Catholic Church, the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) has disclosed that, for years, pastors and other church leaders have committed horrible abuses against church members.
The SBC and local Baptist churches have covered up these abuses. They’ve protected the abusers while doing nothing for the victims. A bombshell report released by the SBC Executive Committee states that the SBC’s “main concern was avoiding potential liability for the SBC.”
The SBC also revealed a 205-page document listing various details about hundreds of abuse cases that occurred throughout the country.
BACKGROUND
For decades, abuse victims and other concerned individuals contacted the SBC to report child molesters and other abusers. The victims alerted the SBC of the abuses in every way possible – letters, emails, phone calls, meetings, rallies, and by contacting the press.
In response, the SBC stonewalled, resisted, and, at times, showed outright hostility to victims. The SBC chose to ignore victims because it wanted to protect the SBC.
Finally, at the 2021 Nashville Convention, the SBC voted to approve the creation of a task force to oversee an independent investigation of the SBC’s Executive Committee’s handling of sexual abuse allegations. The task force hired Guidepost Solutions to conduct the investigation.
On May 15, 2022, Guidepost Solutions issued its report, which exposed the SBC Executive Committee’s deplorable and scandalous handling of sexual abuse allegations.
